The problem occurs because the pressure chamber on the left hand side becomes blocked and/or slow operating [this has the two microswitches and the reddish overfill float in it] and dosn’t allow the metering tank [also on the lefthand side held on with two bars] to empty correctly giving a filling/heating fault, the 1 in display is the machines way of telling the end user that a fatal error has occured. The only remedy is to remove the metering tank and pressure chamber and clean out the pressure chamber, its quite tricky so if you have doubts click the link and get someone in to sort it.
The metering tank may also be full of water so have a washing up bowl to hand, and keep it all unplugged!
