    Hi All,

My Siemens Dishwasher which is just over a year old has stopped working. We have since called an engineer out to inspect the unit. The engineer has informed us that the problem is due to salt corrosion or a chemical reation that has occured and has caused pin prick size holes in the tank.. So water is leaking into the bottom of the unit.

They say this is not covered by the guarntee and cannot be repaired. I feel this is a design fault and has not been caused by my misuse.. How can you possibly misuse a dishwasher just by adding salt and detergent.

I was wondering if anyone else had any advice on how I can tackle this problem, is this really the cause of the problem ? I believe it to be a design fault.. Can anyone advise me on where I stand legally with this.. What steps should I take going foward.. Thanks, Shaun.

If the salt-corrosion was due to you spilling it in other than the designated reservoir,I’d guess you’re on your own.
Big, commercial aluminium cooking-pots specifically exclude this from the guarantee…..doesn’t matter if you pay £100 and only use it to boil water 😯

I’d read the warranty VERY carefully first…….if you still think you’ve got a case, go back to the place where you bought it…..I’ve found local Trading Standards to be less use than a wilted lettuce-leaf, if you want redress, hire a solicitor or punt about £30-£60 to take out a plaint at the County Court.(used to be small claims court, but after 40-odd years they modernised :rolls:

It is indeed NOT covered by any manufacturers guarantee and Siemens are no exception. It would be extremely difficult to argue the fact that an ‘outside influence’ having cause the problem is covered by the guarantee. Especially as salt is so very corrosive by its very nature manufacturers go to great lengths in advising its careful use.

As a warning to others reading this thread, it is most important that you top-up the salt reservoir immediately before beginning a new cycle. Never top-up at the end of a cycle and leave salt deposit residue to sit in contact with the stainless steel tub for any length of time. The metal is only 10 gauge and wafer thin so salt, and also rusty iron cookware and utensils can corrode through very very quickly indeed.:(

It can however in many cases be repaired, Siemens (aka BSH Appliance Care Ltd) can use a special solder to fill the holes/s in many cases. Also a ‘steel putty’ (available from all good DIY stores) can also be an effective DIY option for you to consider.

    HTH? 😀
