ParticipantI need a new electric cooker , either freestanding or separate oven & hob, I don’t mind which (but I haven’t room for a range-style – it will need to take up the width of one standard kitchen unit).
I want to keep it for a long time.
I live in the back of beyond – there are no repair-men prepared to come here.
I cook/bake a lot. I need a well insulated oven with a very solid, well-fitting door & accurate thermostat. I don’t want the knobs to fall off any time soon.
I don’t need 63 special programmes, pizza gismos, steam, a thousand flashing lights like a fairground or for it to talk to my phone!Did I mention I want to keep it a long time?!
Any ideas folks?
Thanks.

Hi
Are these going to be plugged into normal 13A sockets or is there a 45A cooker point in the kitchen?

There’s a cooker point.
I’ve had an AEG freestanding cooker for about 25 years but it’s wearing out now.November 1, 2016 at 7:53 pm #442342don

In that case I would still go with the new equivalent AEG / Zanussi they are far better than anything else currently out there in domestic cookers.
Another area you could consider could be something like Lincat commercial ovens and add a seperate hob.HTH 🙂

So are the AEG still quite well made then? I heard the company had been taken over & they’d gone down hill. That’s why I started looking again from scratch, to see if other makes were more robust now. I’ve been very happy with the old one.

Just had a quick look at the Lincat site. They’d be in budget & look hard-working. (& made in UK?) What are the company like? Do you know if there’d be good after sales service?
Sorry, full of questions! ❓ :eeek:November 1, 2016 at 8:45 pm #442345don

Coverage in the Hebrides may be a little sparse but so would all the others. I was thinking more along the lines of Lincat being a more robust appliance with good reliability which would not need much attention.
I would phone Lincat and have a chat.

I heard that Smeg ovens have poor thermostat control. Does anyone know if that’s true? Are they still made in Italy?

Not true.
The Smeg ovens, some I’ve used at least do tend to be “harsh” in terms of heat to a degree but, like most, you get used to it and adjust your cooking as required. In short, they can appear to run a bit hot but that’s about it really.
So far as I know they are all still Italian made.

Thanks for the reply. Were the ones you had experience of solid & reliable?
(Sorry, I’m full of questions that a trip to a showroom to twiddle buttons would probably solve but there’s no shop within a day’s round trip from me, so I’m relying on other people!)November 3, 2016 at 12:24 pm #442349kwatt

Yes, not really ever had any issue with Smeg cooking products.

😯 😯
I’m tearing my hair out! I’ve been looking at cookers on Which? and Good Housekeeping Institute but then when I look them up on places that sell them, there are none with exactly the same model number. Even the different shops have different numbers to each other and they are different again to the manufacturers’ own sites.
Anyone would think they were deliberately trying to bamboozle us!! :angry4:November 11, 2016 at 1:31 pm #442352Martin

Don seemed to think that perhaps you live on the Hebrides? That being the case then perhaps a trip to Stornaway to visit the local Euronics store might be a good solution. Buying on-line is fraught with risk whereas dealing with a local trade and seeing first hand what your buying is the way forward for you.

Thanks for the reply.
Yes, I live in the Hebrides but not near Stornaway, I’m about 12-14 hours’ journey one way, from it.
I do so agree – buying on-line is a massive P.i.T.A. Not many people deliver here either so I’m doing this with one hand tied behind my back. I think the best I can manage is to narrow my choices down to a shortlist then wait until I’m going to the mainland for a cattle sale or something & stay an extra night to go “cookering”. There are no white goods showrooms in Oban anymore since Hydroelectric shut, so it’s down to Fort William, Perth or Glasgow.
The hobs on the old cooker are working but the oven isn’t. I’m managing with a small combination microwave/oven atm but Christmas & new year are going to be a challenge!
Anyway, thanks for your input. 🙂 -
