Hello everyone this is my first post. I recently donated our Smeg Fab 30 fridge/freezer to my daughter but is seems to have developed a problem I wonder if someone could help me please. The top back of the inside of the fridge rapidly gets a coating of ice on it. I replaced the thermostat to see if that cured the problem but it did not.Is the metal frame at the back of the fridge supposed to get hot to encourage the fridge to defrost itself. I have checked the door seals and they seem ok. Are there any electronics in this fridge that I could get tested?

    Re: Smeg

If it has a standard thermostat then there probably isn’t any electronics controlling it.

If there’s a defrost heater then that may be faulty but, I doubt there’s one fitted.

If the thermostat wasn’t the correct one however or, was not wired correctly, that could give you that problem.

I’m not familiar enough with recent Smeg’s to be of much more help and I don’t have access to their technical info.

Thank you for your reply but I am sure that the metal element behind the fridge used to get warm or hot but it does not do that now.

Well have further examined the Smeg Fab30 and the fridge door seal is split at the top so that is where the air is getting in.Anyone replaced one of these and where can they be sourced?

hello, sorry to have seen this late, but it looks like you’re barking up the wrong tree with a thermostat here.
i’m sure this model is a gorenje built one and as such is a fairly simple appliance.
when you talk about the metal element, are you talking about the black condenser grill that sits on the outside at the very back of the fridge freezer?
if so, the purpose of this grill is to dissipate the heat that is in the compressed refrigerant, as it has left the compressor.
at the point that the refrigerant enters the condenser, it should be quite warm, getting cooler as the pipework goes on.
if it used to be warm and then now isn’t, it sounds to me like you have a system fault, ie. low refrigerant or worse case, compressor fault.
this diagnosis would be backed up by the ice build up in the top corner of the fridge.
is it the top left hand corner?
don’t spend any more money in parts, but instead, if the fridge is still in good order, call out an engineer.
there’s a search facility on this site.

Hi thank you for your advice. I think you are right about the lack of coolant. When we had the compressor replaced a while ago there was too much coolant in the system and the engineer released some. I think it was a little while after we started getting build up on the back of the fridge. Do you think also that the split door seal could aggravate the problem?Thank you

    Re: Smeg

I wouldn’t have thought so. If the fridge door seal was an issue then the fridge would be working harder to counter this.
If the fridge was working harder, you’d have a lot of frost.
Also, if the door seal wasn’t good enough, you’d have condensation in the fridge.
