ParticipantI have recently replaced a failed main oven element in last 2 months. Everything seemed fine until just after the christmas meal where we noticed an electrical smell coming from through the vent. I have removed the back panel and isolated the fan motor then switched on – still get electrical smell. I then isolated the cooling fan – still get smell.
I then isolated the main element – smell stops.
Could it be a faulty element, I bought an original smeg part.
The oven around 2001 model. Can someone help
ThanksDecember 29, 2012 at 8:03 am #386886DrDill

I would check the selector switch for burning contacts.

Also the mains terminal block, they are known to fail if the mains cable is poorly connected.
Smell will seem apparent when element energised due to current being drawn.

Thanks, looks like the main terminal block is to fault.
Do you think this is a loose connection or do I replace with a new block?
Thanks

It started with a bad joint and it will continue unless you replace the block

Thanks I will do that – I have cleaned and tightened the spade connector do you think I should cut back some of the wire and fit a new spade connector?
Thanks

a poor/bad joint will create heat which in turn makes the joint worse so it gets even hotter then you end up with what you had.
