    Hi,

I have a smeg fridge freezer fab32R3. It works fine but is not resaleable as it has dents etc. I want to change it for a frost free model. I have found a fab32RNR for sale cheaply on eBay because it needs a new compressor.
Would it be possible to swap the compressor from my working smeg to the newer one ie is the compressor interchangeable. If so, approximately how much would it cost to get an engineer to do that type of job?
any advice appreciated. If it helps, I live in west Cornwall.
    Thank you

well even if it was possible to swop compressors its not a DIY job

old gas has to be removed from both units. piped have to be cut and compressor brazed in plus a new drier

Air need to be withdrawn from system to make a vacuum then the correct amount of gas added

so you need a refrigeration engineer who will have F-gas qualifications to do all this

Hi Dave, thank you for such a swift reply – much appreciated. I was not intending to do the job myself that is why I asked for the cost for an engineer to do the job.
Are the compressors from the two models interchangeable and, if so, what would the approx cost be for an engineer to do the job?
Thanks in advance for your help and advice.

you would have to get pics of the information labels off both compressors to be able to determine if you can swop them

not a fridge man myself so have little or no experience of this

These days to replace a compressor would likely cost the thick end of £200 or more depending on the work required.
