ParticipantOur Smeg dishwasher packed in a few weeks ago, I’ve read the various troubleshooting articles but nothing specific to the problem with my machine. It stopped working mid rinse cycle and the pump continued to sound like it was working. However, I switched the unit off completely and let it sit for a week or so. Started the machine yesterday and it started from the initial cycle, after a minute or so there is an electrical buzzing sound coming from the location of the LED’s on the right hand top of the door as you look at the machine.
Anyone come across this problem before or have any suggestions on where to start troubleshooting
Many Thanks for any advice.November 24, 2008 at 12:22 am #269253Penguin45

Wash pump or drain pump? Drain pump will run indefinitely if the base floods. A week later, the water will have evaporated, thus re-setting the anti-flood switch. However….
There is a relay on the pcb in the control panel which is the switching relay for the heater circuit – I suppose it could rattle for a variety of reasons. More than likely you have a corruption issue or a pcb failure as outlined in the article in the “Articles and Help” section. No specific answer, I’m afraid. These are technically complex machines and without experience of their numerous foibles, it’s an almost impossible call.
Sorry,

Many thanks for your reply,
I turned the machine back on again and set it to carry out a glass wash.
The drain pum commences and I can hear water being purged by the machine, after around 30 seconds I can hear intermittent inlet of water whilst the drain pump continues to run, the first LED on the machine cycle is flashing.
next the drain pump stops and water inlet commences, the 2nd LED flashes and the powder/tablet box releases, after a short time the water inlet stops and the electrical buzzing noise that I mentioned in the earlier mail commences.
have listened closely and to be honest it could be from anywhere but is loudest near the LED;s on the right hand side at the top of the door that show where the machine is in the program cycle. The machine moves no further forward at this point and just buzzes. No water being pushed around the paddles and no sounds usually associated with the wash cycle.
There is approx 1″ of water in the bottom of the machine and if left long enough does start to heat.
Never had the buzzing sound before!
Appreciate the complexity but are there any components I could check with a meter to test function or readings that I should be seeing? Just trying to troubleshoot and rule out buying anything that doesn’t need replacing!
Again, many thanks for your help!November 26, 2008 at 11:36 pm #269255eastlmark

Although its nowhere near the place where you said the sound is coming from, it does sound like the circulation pump is not running and just humming instead. Could be either a siezed pump (expensive to repair) or a failed capacitor which is bolted to the circulation pump motor (cheap to repair but difficult to access and can only really test by replacement). make sure you unplug if you do take a look but would advise a smeg experienced engineer take a look.

Hi Lemole, I know you posted this message nearly 3 years ago, but I have the same problem now and was wondering if you ever managed to fix it without an engineer been called out. Cheers.
