smeg dishwasher PL 944 – gets stuck in the wash cycle

My dishwasher finished its wash cycle two days ago, but when I opened it to empty the dishes I noticed that the detergent tablet was on the bottom, semi melted, and that the dishes were not clean.

I tried it again, and realised that the electric resistance at the bottom was heating up, but without water being pumped in.

Now, it gets stuck before the wash cycle, about 3 minutes after I turn it on, but the electrical heater does not switch on.

I’ve had this dishwasher for about 5 years. What do you think might be the problem?

Circulation problem. Motor seized/cooked or start capacitor not kicking in would be my thoughts. Can you hear a humming noise when it should be circulating?

Stay safe if investigating – power off.
