ParticipantI have a SUK61MBL8 Smeg Dual Fuel 60cm Cooker (“Concert” model).
It has been a flipping nightmare! It is about five years old, but for a woman who is (mostly) here on her own and tends to use the microwave often, it has been poor reliability-wise.
The door seal perished within two years (it has metal prong clips on each corner, glued into the rubber, but it weakens over time and comes undone). It has now done it again and needs replacing.
The “frying pan/wok” gas hob has stopped working – it ignites but doesn’t stay lit when I release the ignition.
Now, tonight, the fan oven is refusing to heat. Just blasting cold air. The fan still turns and the internal light works.
I’ve read it can either be the thermostat or element – though 9/10 times the element is the culprit. Is there a way of confirming this for sure (the grill still works, if that helps)?
The orange light that normally comes on when heating the oven lights as normal, but doesn’t go off as it would when the oven reaches the desired temperature – obviously, as it’s cold 🙂 Nor do I hear the slight “click” when I turn the temperature knob around (though it does that when the oven’s sufficiently heated).
To save me a few pennies I was going to source the needed parts myself (the rubber seal is easy enough to fix as I get boyf to do that).
Compared to the el cheapo cookers I’ve had in the past (and sold on as they were still working perfectly) this “prestige brand” has been a complete disappointment.
Be honest – would you recommend this deadbeat cooker was consigned to history and I should go shopping for another?

no way of being 100{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d}. most ovens have a red light that is on when the oven is heating and off when it reaches temperature. if this light is on then its fairly certain its the element
beware of cheap copy elements as we seem to have a glut of Chinese elements which I feel are not fit for purpose and fail quickly

Thanks, Dave 🙂 appreciate the reply. I would go for genuine spares every time.
So far I’ve found a door seal (I can see moans on Amazon from people saying theirs perish pretty quickly too, sigh) and a “newer version” 3-turn element.
Element: https://www.servevastdirect.co.uk/produ … -fan/2028/
Seal: https://www.servevastdirect.co.uk/produ … seal/5346/The only part I’m having trouble locating is the Wok themocouple for this model – though that’s me assuming what’s at fault. UKWhitegoods lists this as being suitable but there’s a few thermocouples showing for this model http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/111924861262

servevast are the official agents so they can supply and guarantee it fits. if you cant see it ring them, they will give you a part number to find it on their site. but they can be dear and they hide the gen numbers so you cant cross ref with google
also try emailing the site shop and ask if they can supply the gen parts
thermocouple may not be faulty. check it in the flame ie no blocked jets. also disconnect from gas valve, clean connection and replace

I would advise caution here when messing with gas appliances. My guess is that the OP has little or no experience dealing with gas repairs. Always but always consult a Gas Safe approved repairer to carry out such work.

The only unauthorised fix I am willing to do is the door seal, thanks for highlighting caution anyway, I’d have to be mad to fiddle with a gas appliance :zap: 🙂

Hello again!
Servevast were very helpful and I got all the right parts (oven element, door seal, wok thermocouple). The thermocouple I’ll leave for an expert, the element I did myself.
Is this wiring something I should be concerned about? I took a picture of the wiring for my own reference. This is the old element before removal/replacement: http://i.imgur.com/QBiAPeI.jpg
There’s videos/pictures on the net that look more like this! http://static.yourspares.co.uk/media/pc … ment-5.JPG
All works well, at least I have my oven back to normal.
