ParticipantHi everyone,
I have a Smeg DWF409SS, which has been working fine up until today!
Basically it gets stuck on the wash cycle. If i put it on the ‘Soak’ programe it will work ok as that just does a cold prewash and then empties. If I try any other programe they all just stick on the wash part of the cycle and it just keeps going. I did open it to see if the water was warming up whilst in the wash cycle but the water was also cold (the manual says it should have heated up to 45C on this particular one).
Please if anyone can help, let me know.
Thanks in advance,

You’ve more or less answered your own question – no heat. I would suggest that the tube heater under the machine has failed. It’s possible that the wiring has burnt out, but that’s quite unusual these days.
If you wish to take this on, you need a multimeter to check the resistance through the heater – 25-30 ohms is generally acceptable.
If you don’t know how to proceed use the Repairs@ link on the left to find a UKW engineer in your area.
Power off if you are going to investigate this yourself.

I have just got my father in law to check the heat tube (he is an electrician) and its binging up a reading of 30.4 ohms.
Just wondering if you have any more sugestions?
Many thanks.

Reading on heater is acceptable. This where it starts to get complicated….. The computer allows a period of time to heat the water – if no heat is detected, that is a fault and should be indicated by a combination of flashing lights. If it doesn’t, it would suggest some sort of corruption issue on the computer board. A read of this article may clarify things and give you an idea of what you are up against.

Thanks for all the advise so far.
Today I set off the dishwasher to see what would happen if I left it running, as previously it just seemed to keep going (stuck on wash) and not bring up any error code.
I set it off on the ‘BIO’ wash, when it got to the wash part of the cycle it got stuck again, so I left it running on this while I went out. On returning it has brought up an error code, all 5 of the program lights were lit and the first 2 (out of 5) program phase lights were flashing, according to my manual this is a E3 error which says ‘the appliance is unable to pump out the water’ but I went onto Smeg support site and according to the errors on there E3 is no heating? Considering it has pumped the water out I am presuming my manual is wrong.
When I checked mid cycle the water wasn’t warm but had definatly heated a little as it wasn’t freezing cold (being cold feed only) and having checked the heat element that was ok.
Could it be a temperature thermostat that is faulty, if so where would this be located? Also does anyone know what the resistance should be for the thermostat (hot+cold) as I can get that checked before buying a new one?
If not the thermostat any other ideas on what could be wrong would be appreciated.
Thanks once again, Kelly.

It is a corruption issue, Kelly. The error code would be presented as 1+2 flashing, 5 steady. All 5 flashing is a bonkers pcb. Read the article linked above again and consider what it says. You are either going to throw (expensive) parts at it until it works, or you’ll have to concede and get pro help
