Hi, smelt a burning smell in my kitchen a couple of days ago after the oven had been used so i opened the door to find that the element was still bright red even though the oven was turned off and the temperature knob set to zero? i switched it off at the mains and when i switched it back on it was fine?

Was on nightshift last night and the wife rang to say the oven had done it again and tripped the downstairs ring main. Ive just pulled the oven out and had a look at it but cant see any visible damage, turned the oven on and let it get up to temperature then turned it off to find the element still glowing a couple of minutes later, switched it off at the mains then back on and the element went out but came on itself again about 4 mins later even though the temperature was set at zero and the dial turned off?

Anyone had this before or have any ideas what i can check first?

    Any help greatly appreciated!

Sounds like a switch in the selector unit is sticking together. If the machine has also tripped the power, it will need to be insulation tested. Smeg parts are not cheap so accurate fault finding is essential. Power off if you are to investigate further, but an engineer visit for this fault would be money wisely spent. 😉

ok mate cheers, took the oven out of a kitchen we removed for a new fit so it hasnt cost me anything, i can get trade prices on a new Neff or Bosch as i work for a kitchen fitter on my days off so i might just bite the bullet… was hoping for a short term fix til another freebie comes along but it could be weeks or months!

Just out of interest though are these selector units easy enough to inspect?

Im pretty handy with a soldering iron and it looks like its on its way to the tip if i dont have a go anyway!

    thanks again for the advice

You would need to remove the knob and lid to look at the selector unit. Power off!!!
Remove the screws that hold the unit in (behind the knob) and turn the selector over. Look at each leaf switch in turn; look for signs of burning and discolouration. Refit the knob and turn the selector while observing the switches open and close. That will allow you to establish the fault.
As well as this, you will need to find the cause of the MCB tripping off, so both faults will have to be found before pricing or buying parts. It’s worth a try as Smeg ovens are quite well made.

Again, Power off before any inspection. :plug:
