I bought a SMEG FAB28LP Fridge second hand (£49 as the previous owner said it had issues). It is in excellent condition but sometimes the compressor does not cut in. I have replaced the start relay but that has not fixed the problem. Sometimes just opening the door makes the compressor start. Also, turning the thermostat dial to the off position and then back to max sometimes works. Sometimes it runs fine for days. The compressor is an Embraco EMU40CLC. The datasheet for this compressor says it should have a 4uF run capacitor. I cannot find this. Should it be wired to the start relay or is it hidden somewhere?

Smeg does not show a capacitor for it, just the relay/starter.

This may not be a compressor fault, It could be a control fault

From a quick look it seems to have a simple thermostat so you can try something.

there are a number of fridges with similar model numbers some use a hydraulic stat others use electronics. we would need to double check the model on the label

go here and put your model in and you will see https://www.servevastdirect.co.uk/

wait till its not working, open the door gently then tap the thermostat knob firmly. if the compressor bursts into life its a stat problem

did look on smeg site and they want over £100 for the stat but site shop may know of an equivalent

Thanks guys. The tapping the thermostat knob has worked twice now so I will replace the thermostat. Regards, A.
