SMEG FAB30 frozen food in fridge & compressor always running

Hello People, any suggestions here for my SMEG FAB30 fridge freezer?

Food in some parts of the fridge is being frozen. The thermostat is turned right down to number one setting but the compressor can be heard running permanently. It never takes a break!

I thought it would be a faulty thermostat (all the right signs no?) so i replaced this with a brand new one. But the problem is exactly the same. Effectively there is no temperature control. Compressor runs all the time, food gets frozen in the fridge and our electricity bill is sky high!

PS It’s kept indoors in a regular temperature kitchen. There is good airflow around the back of unit.Its around 7 years old

Low on refrigerant or the compressor is not pumping properly.

You will need an engineer to repair it.

Apologies for the thread necromancy!

My fab32 is doing exactly the same things, I even changed the thermostat to no avail too.

Sounds like compressor or coolant, but no idea of likely costs of repair. Does the OP remember what happened? Sent you a message @jaguarpaw.

With Xmas around the corner and the family turning up, want to keep the Mrs happy with this one! Help!

bear in mind that post was 2013 and since he has only posted twice its unlikely you will get a reply

you changed the stat but from what you said it was not going to cure it. a stat turns on the compressor. If it fails to turn it off then everything would freeze and that is not the symptoms you have

my guess as has been said earlier by Samuri and I quote

“Low on refrigerant or the compressor is not pumping properly.

You will need an engineer to repair it.”

you need professional help, if the compressor has failed you need to think whether its worth it. If its just lost gas it may be able to be topped up but if it has a small leak it will do it again in the future

Thanks Dave, agree totally and did realise it was a bit of a punt to know what of the two options it was in his case.

Is there a recommended sketching repairers? I know it’s generic underneath, but really wary of chancing it with a local firm from a cold call.

Miss it he days when tech worked for a good decade before packing in!
