ParticipantHi there,
As per subject title I have a 2018/6 year old (still current generation LED light model) Smeg FAB30 fridge freezer with issues (again). Bit of a back story the unit was repaired by a specialist 18 months who replaced the control board, fridge thermostat temp control and the two temp sensors , one in the fridge and one in the freezer at a ridiculous costs of over £700.00p! This happend after it wouldn’t work after being moved all of 3 ft away from the back wall.
Anyway back to the present ,out of curiosity I had a look at the main control circuit board which is under the top cover it had water/condensation within the the casing and the main control circuit board had had a short and i could see corrosion on the solder. The cause of the water was the sensor wire had been pulled up and had brought the foam protection out a little way and this was soaking wet!. I since poked down the foam insulation and dried the housing area thoroughly and ordered a replacement control board. Since then the unit has now decided to throw another wobbly whereas it intermittently cools down to -8 degrees in the freezer and 8/9 degrees in the fridge for around 4 hours then warms back up again almost to room temperature and unless I physically switch off the unit and leave for an hour or two before applying the power again starts the cooling process again. The compressor has been making an almost harmonic varying pitch noise that pulses hi and lo hum is best I can describe it.
As per usual with these atheistic appliances it would cost £1700.00p to replace and it still looks too good to just throw away. Any helpful tips or a solution would be appreciated.
Thanks

KeymasterCan you see if the insulation is wet where the sensor wire comes through as if so, as I suspect, that’s a big problem?

ParticipantHi Kwatt,
I have checked the control board housing area and where the sensor wire and fridge temp control wire comes up through is still very wet as in the foam that protects the wires, I am tempted to see if the if I can remove the right hand side panel to gain access to the wires and the routing to dry it completely out. I checked the temps yesterday and the fridge was at 5,3c and the freezer at -18c but as soon as I had opened the door the unit started to warm back up and within 4 hours was at 8c fridge and -5c.October 23, 2024 at 7:38 am #491536kwatt
KeymasterThe insulation being wet is a problem, as I said, and if that is the case, the unit is pretty much a write-off. You’d never get it dry and to re-foam a unit is impractical and even where you can you’ve got, at best, a 50/50 chance that a repair would work.

ParticipantThe intermittent cooling could be due to a compressor or control board issue, especially with the corrosion you mentioned. The pulsating noise suggests the compressor might be struggling. Check if the fan is running properly and ensure there are no obstructions. If the new board doesn’t fix it, the compressor might need further inspection, or it could be a refrigerant issue.
