    Hi,

I have an inbuilt Smeg FR 158 fridge which is approximately 5 years old.

It was functioning fine until I returned from holiday.

There is power to the unit and the light comes on but it does not cool.

When turned off and on the fridge appears to start although there is limited noise and about 10 seconds after there is a click possibly from the thermostat area. It then remains on with what sounds like running water going through it.

I have a thermometer in the fridge and it’s reading about 18 degrees at the moment.

It doesn’t make any noise like it is going to come alive but I am wondering if the thermostat is faulty and if the clicking noise I hear is the thermostat shutting it down.

I am pretty competent but have not dealt with fridges before. Is there an easy test. Given the potential call-out charge vs replacement I am a little reluctant to get an engineer in.

I am grateful for any advice.

    Matthew

clicking noise is compressor tripping out, probably seized. Its probably beyond economical repair

    Hi,

    Thank you for your assistance.

I have pulled the fridge out tonight. I see that the fan is operational. It doesn’t seem to be making the clicking noise any more. There is however no noise from the compressor.

There is a black box affixed to the compressor where the cables go in. I am having some trouble removing the cover. Are there likely to be any relays that could have gone underneath – if not I shalln’t spend any more time and source a replacement but if there might be, and they could have failed, it might be worth investing some time in it.

    Thanks again

    Matthew

The compressor start device is behind the cover, but it is very unlikely to be the problem
