ParticipantHello All,
HELP!
My fridge door has just broken. A spring popped, bits of plastic flew out and now it won’t shut. Can I buy a new hinge? Is it easy to replace? I don’t really want to buy a new fridge unless I absolutely have to!It’s a Smeg fridge. One of the ones that is hidden behind a cupboard door. The hinge itself has ‘HETTICH’ written on it, as well as the number ‘3905 5.0’.
Inside the fridge door are details such as:
CODE: 751321
MOD LF1700C
S/N 00607 0205 1Can anyone advise? I’m in the middle of selling my house and don’t want buyers looking around when the fridge door is broken so I need to get this sorted tomorrow!
What are the chances? Thanks so much.

Bad news, the official replacement kit is this one:
http://shop.ukwhitegoods.co.uk/93133160 … e-kit-9161
You’ll understand why that’s bad when you see the price.
After you recover from the shock, drop an email to Dave on spares@ukwhitegoods.co.uk who may be able to suggest a much less expensive option. 😉

Ouch. That’s a “I might as well buy a new fridge” price! Especially when other hinges come as cheaply as £30 a pair.
Fingers crossed there’s a third party version that will do the job. I’ll email Dave now.
Thanks for the help!

Dave found me a better option. The exact same hinge is listed as an AEG part and is cheaper at £28.80. Thanks all!

Got new hinges. Hung on door etc. Seemingly nice and easy.
But now why doesn’t the door close? It almost closes but doesn’t stay shut like it used to.

Is the door hitting anything?
Can you see any adjustment?

The door isn’t hitting anything. It makes a small difference if I loosen the screws holding it to the main part of fridge and/or the door. But doesn’t seem to fix it.
Have I fitted it wrong somehow? Are the screws not supposed to be fully tightened or something? I’m baffled.

No idea without seeing it but, the hinges can only go one way and pretty much come in one flavour only.

They don’t seem to sit flat, even without the door there. Is that they way they should be?

I really can’t say as I can’t see it. 😉
It’s really hard with this stuff if you’re not looking at it.

I just want some things to try and I can’t think of anything else to do. I’ve never done this before but I need this fixed ASAP as I’m trying to sell the house and a broken fridge door doesn’t look good!
Anyone else got any ideas on things I could try??

Got it! The two sets of screws, one that went into the fridge cabinet, the other into the door, seemed identical but on further inspection – the head on one set is a small amount thicker.
I then realised the screws were mixed up so the thicker ones that were fixed to the cabinet needed to be the thinner ones are the hinge wouldnt sit flat and didn’t shut. Once I’d changed that, all works fine.
Thanks for getting back to me though!
