Had a long phone call with a mate of mine. He’s in a rented barn conversion a few miles up the hill and has one of these beasts making loud knocking noise.
    From sticker behind door:
    WM16AAA
    Nr 0554964 034
Type 02048 (last could be 6?)
    50/900/KPA
He thinks it can only be a couple of years old (time of kitchen installation) but I’ve seen threads on here going back to 2005 relating to this model. (Landlord unobtainable ATM)
I see it has one of those weird all-in-one bearings which I believe are self-centring and flop about anyway. Only similar one I ever saw was on a Zanussi ages ago. Parts look expensive. What do you reckon’?
As for spider, picture on Connect makes it look substantial, like an LG. Can’t see it rotting in 2 years.
Probably need heater element too by the sounds of it. Anybody got experience of working on these?
    Mike.

Eastlmark is a bit of a whizz on these Smeggies. My guess is that it is around 6 yrs old, spider corroded/cracked, bearings the sound of distant thunder, bu$$er to work on….Your ideal territory Mike I reckon. 😀

Yeah, I bet you’re right. Maybe I should just tell him to go out and get a new one, save us all the hassle :rolls: .

Well I went up there today and I am a bit puzzled. First of all the lip of the drum is not well centred. There’s a gap of around 8mm at one point whilst it’s just touching the seal on the opposite edge.
I was almost convinced it was a spider job but could not detect any movement whatsoever. There was a little noise of metal against rubber once every rev. but I put this down to lip / doorseal but I suppose could be bearing seal? Then put a couple of large towels in and got em wet and waited the time it took to complete a spin programme :study: When I woke up again, I realised that it wasn’t actually making much noise at all. There was just a couple of short scratching noises once or twice as though something like a bra-wire might be getting tossed around. I removed the heater element to have a look in there for anything but found nothing and decided it was perhaps the table tennis ball popping up now and again and touching the distorted drum. Looking through the heater hole it was evident the drum was equally out of kilter on it’s back perimeter as at the front. But it did not in any way seem to be detached from the spider nor to have any fracture 😕 . No damage to heater clip either.
I squeezed the heater grommet back into its hole which only took about a quarter of an hour 👿 , re-assembled and tested for leaks. Took my fee and told them to carry on using until there was something more recognisably faulty. Showed my mate exactly how to test for spider fracture so should only get a call if there’s something really amiss.
    Mike.
