ParticipantWhilst cooking I got the faint smell of what I thought was electrical burning. Thinking maybe the missus had recently cleaned the oven & the remnants of the product used is what I could smell, I continued cooking.
Suddenly, there was a brief fizzing sound from the oven & then a puff of black smoke appeared from the air gap above the plinth at the base of the cooker. The cooker fuse simultaneously tripped on the domestic board. I reset the fuse & the oven started working, but when I opened the oven door the fan impellar at the back had stopped & appeared red hot! Fearing a fire behind the kitchen unit, I immediately turned off the oven, pulled it out & disconnected it.
I took the back off the oven & the plastic ends of the coil on the back of the fan are charred & melted.
Qs. What happened? Why? Is it repairable? If so, what is the likely cost of parts & labour? Can you recommend an Engineer in the RH5 (Dorking) area? Is this make & model any good?
Many thanks… Forest Gump (“Run from the fire Forest, run!”) 😯

Sounds like the fan motor bought it……. Generally good quality equipment, definitely worth getting repaired.
The number quoted is not the model number, so am unable to identify motor for you.
For a UKW engineer in your area, click the link below and fill in your details.

ParticipantThank you for your reply 😀
The model No. quoted was from a Smeg sticker on top of the oven casing. It’s actually a White-Westinghouse oven. Their Owners Guide also quotes the model No. as 05-203105. I think the prefix just refers to the finish (stainless steel). Is this of any more help in identifying the motor?
What are the chances of getting this fixed in time for my Christmas dinner?
Kind regards… Forest

Yup, 05-203105 is SMEG-built. Email that number through to spares@ukwhitegoods.co.uk for speedy supply if you are doing this yourself.
Failing that, the repairs@ link below will find you a UKW repairer in your area.

Just a quick update to let you know the fan motor arrived today (first class post) & was very easy to fit. Looks like I’ll be having Christmas Dinner after all!
Thanks for your advice & the excellent online spares order service. The fan motor cost me just 33.90 (inc. delivery). I saved on the cost of having to calling out an engineer & at the same time feel proud of my achievement. Only trouble is the missus is now putting me to work on other DIY jobs!
Thank you Penguin45… 😀
