ParticipantIf anyone can help I would be grateful.
I have a SMEG oven UK80MFX1.
Whilst in use our village suffered a power cut. When power came back on the oven did not. Having reset trips on MCB, the oven still refuses to work.
Changed the 13amp fuse (this model is specifically designed to run off a 13amp rather than 30amp circuit) and as soon as I try to switch on the power at the socket, it trips the MCB again and blows the local 13amp fuse in the plug.
I have spoken to SMEG who say that the LED clock might be blown and suggest calling out an engineer. I don’t understand why this would have happened because of a power cut and why it would not allow the oven to work. Having had the main element blow after only 1 and a half years I am keen to not waste more money. Is there anything I can check myself to ascertain if it really is the clock etc.
regards and thanks

There’s not really a lot you can do to check for yourself unless you have a multimeter and the neccessary skill/qualifications to use it.
The checks you have already done point to an electrical fault within the oven which may indeed be the clock.
Sometimes when there is a ‘power outage’ the supply doesn’t simply switch on and off cleanly, there can be some very nasty ‘spikes’ druing the process which can damage delicate electronics (e.g. your oven clock)
In this case the oven will not funtion as a matter of safety because the power for the oven passes through the clock to enable an auto function set by the clock (timed cooking). This is a requirement of British safety standards to prevent a previously set clock switching the appliance on when power is restored and the appliance may be unattended.
You may like to ask around the village if anyone else has suffered damage as a result of the power problems…if they have then you may have a case against the electricity supplier for causing the damage, and indeed i have attended some repairs where the electricity supplier had agreed to pay for the work.May 12, 2005 at 7:38 pm #134495eastlmark

Clive,
Thank you for your explanation. Certainly a more detailed answer then I received from SMEG, and one that makes sense. My concern is that I can pay to get it fixed, SMEG have quoted £149 + VAT for the part + fitting, but what is to stop it happening again! We have approx 6-12 power cuts a year in my village.
Anyway I appreciate you taking the time to respond to my query, I have not used a forum like this before and its nice that people just want to help.
regards

It’s actually £130.91 inc VAT plus fitting. I don’t know where they got that price from, I have the Smeg current price list here as suppplied by them.
Contact your electricity supplier I would recommend, it would appear as Clive says, the power surge may well have caused this.

Dave,
Thank you.
I have been in touch with the regional electricity company and OFGEM who say that there is nothing they will do in terms of the former and nothing they can do in terms of the latter.
I have been advised to claim of my contents insurance, which I might well do except I’m concerned that it will just happen again. I’m hoping that the insurance company will right it off and then I can buy a different oven. My whole experience with SMEG (I have had other problems already with the oven) and its customer service (which is really a contradiction in terms) has been dreadful.
Only problem is I need an 80cm Range Cooker to fill the space (I spent a very large amount of money on a custom built kitchen last year and I don’t want to start choping that about), which manufacturer in the industry is best known for their reliability?
regards
Gregory

Depending on where you are, I am sure your local repairer could carry out a little mod to cure this cheaply, assuming you dont actualy want the clock working.

Thank you to everybody for their advice.
I am getting the cooker replaced under my house contents insurance as the engineer said it was beyond economical repair. Will have to get another SMEG (like for like) and intend to get a 5 year extended warranty at the same time. I have never taken out an extended warranty in my life, but the problems with this oven and having read dozens of similar reports on the web concerning SMEG I’m not taking any more chances.
