ParticipantHello,
I’ve got a Smeg SE378MFX5 single oven which is getting mega hot during cooking / when switched off, particularly on the controls and glass. I don’t believe that it was this hot when i first bought it, however I’ve not used it for 4 years as it has been in my old house which I’ve been renting out. I’ve moved it back to my new house and now we’ve got an 18 month old its a bit of a worry.
So far i think that i have established that it needs a new thermostat (oven heats up to 250 degrees when set at 200 degrees on the controls)
The cooling fan is noisy, but seems to do the job of keeping the controls cool whilst the oven is on, however as soon as it cuts out the controls become red hot. The door is red hot even with the cooling fan on both during and after cooking.
I’ve read the information about how hot a door can be and still be within acceptable tolerances – I’ve not been able to test it as i do not have the equipment, but either way the temperature is unacceptable to me with a child in the house….. a simple touch test is about 5 second before it feels like its going to burn.
I know the first thing i need to do is replace the thermostat (which is fine with me I’m comfortable replacing like for like parts on appliances) and possibly the cooling fan as well, but my biggest concern is that this will not fix the hot door issue and I’ll have to get a new oven anyway. I’ve checked the seal and this seems ok, but is a stick on type and not a clip one.
Can anyone give me any indication that this particular model should have a ‘cool(ish)’ door whilst cooking? And also whether its worth chucking money at it or just getting a new one?
Thanks in advance,

Smeg ovens I’ve used, if they get too hot, will cremate anything in them. You know if the main thermostat is faulty only too well.
If as you say the oven is at 250?C when set to anything less then the mains thermostat is almost certainly faulty as it only has two states, on and off. If it’s permanently on then it will heat till the overheat thermostat cuts it off.
The main thermostat is here:

I would have expected it to cut out on the overheat if that was faulty though.
The cooling fan, if not right, will allow it to overheat on the front panel and knobs. It has to blast air over it all to keep the surface temperatures down.
That’s here:

It is possible albeit not common, that the cooling fan not running correctly could, possibly, cause the overheat and from what you’ve said I’d be looking there first.
