ParticipantMorning all, may I delve into your knowledge to help me with a problem?
My customer has a freestanding Smeg single oven (SUK65G), it’s on old model, probably pre-2000. It’s a gas oven, but has an electric grill.
The grill element needed replacing, so I ordered the part from Random Spares (the only place I could find it). When the part arrived it was different from the original element, it has 4 prongs rather than 2. I connected the spades to the grill part of the element and put the oven back together. When I turned it on and turned the selector switch it tripped twice, each time I had to replace the 13amp fuse in the plug. I took the oven apart again and made sure the connections were secure. Put the oven back together and then it worked without tripping.3 weeks on and the customer says it’s tripping again. Can you help me diagnose the problem?
Many thanks,

what worries me is that you had to replace the 13a fuse when you first put the element in. thats not tripping its a short circuit
as for tripping now are you talking tripping an RCD or do you mean blowing 13a fuses ?

Hi Dave, thank you for the reply.
Turning the selector switch is causing the 13a fuses to blow, not the RCD. I replaced 2, and my customer replaced 2 too.

I would be checking the condition of the selector switch

Thank you for your reply Lawrence,
It’s only been blowing the fuses since I installed the new element, so could it still be a faulty selector switch?

It wasn’t heating up. My customer said they grill regularly and it’s an old oven so the element probably came to the end of it’s life.
