ParticipantHi all,
This is my first post here so hope you can help. I’ve a Smeg S200x/I built-in oven which has an integrated microwave function. Yesterday the microwave function stopped heating. The LED flashes ok when you press the button but no heating ‘hum’ as per normal.
Can anyone point me in the right direction please? I was going to test the capacitor / diode but I’m not sure how to access it. So before I go digging if anyone has any info on these I’d appreciate it..Many thanks,
Nick

Moderatorok the fact you have a hum does sound like the tranformer may be energising
this transformer has an output of about 2500V this arrives at the magnetron at about 5000V DC
really is not something you want to be messing with unless you know how to discharge the capacitor. Under fault conditions there can be lethal voltages in the unit long after it is switched off

ParticipantThanks for that Dave. Sorry maybe my post is a little ambiguous. I’m not getting the hum that I usually get when running the microwave function so it appears the transformer isn’t energising.
Regarding safety, I’m fairly confident since I did my apprentice as an electrical technician so I won’t kill myself but I’m not familiar with how these ovens are put together, and I i’ve not done anything with microwave tech.
cheers,
Nick

ParticipantAs per Dave’s post above DO NOT mess inside microwave ovens unless you are very sure about what you are doing because if you get things wrong the outcome won’t be good.

Moderatoron the simple side there is often a seperate fuse for the microwave section. sometimes these can fail for no apparant reason so its worth checking
keep away from the magnetron and high voltage circuits

ParticipantThanks for that. As I say I’ve worked on high voltage circuits both professionally and domestically even to the likes of replacing capacitors in valve guitar amplifiers, so safety is not a problem. Understanding how Smeg put the oven together would be helpful.
