SMEG SE335SS/1 Thermostat replacement

Hi all,

New to the forum and hoping someone can help me out (constructive criticism is welcome)!

We’ve recently ran into an issue with our oven where it heats well above the set temperature (+150°C). All parts of the oven functioned as expected, it just got hotter than we’d have liked!

It’s out of warranty so I decided it would be a cheaper option to take it into my own hands. I have some experience with electronics in general, but not ovens specifically, although I thought I’d give it a go. After a bit of research (which didn’t lead me here initially), I was convinced the thermostat was the problem. So convinced, I spent £90 on one off eSpares. According to them, it’s compatible with my oven.

When it arrived, it wasn’t exactly the same type, but I remember reading that Smeg changed to using EGO thermostats and a lot of the original ones are no longer available – I’m assuming that includes mine too. So I went with it.

I noted the connections of the old thermostat, swapped them out, popped the oven back in place and tested. No dice 🙁

The original one had two terminals: 1 and C. The new one had three terminals: 1, 2, and (⏚) . I assumed the ground symbol meant Common. So when connecting the new thermostat, I wired it up to the 1 terminal (using the wire that came from the original 1) and the (⏚) terminal (using the wire that came from the original C).

With this wiring, the oven will not heat on any setting and I’m look for a bit of guidance on my next steps.

the way you wired it, did it go bang?

you should have ignored the earth unless there was a green and yellow attached to the original

Hi Dave,

Thanks for the reply. Looking into the eSpares returns policy as we speak…

And no – No bangs, No trips, and No heat.
I put the old thermostat back in to check everything still functions and it did – including heating up, so I have another shot at it.
