ParticipantHello,
The ultra-rapid burner on this ignites OK, but as soon as you let go of the knob, the flame goes out (or at best, maybe 15 seconds later). I think I’ve cleaned it pretty thoroughly, and all of the holes appear to be clear, but the two flames nearest to the thermocouple never seem to stay lit, although all others are OK.
Hob is about 8 years old.
Thanks in advance for any advice you might have.

Probably some sort of thermocouple problem. However, you must not attempt this repair yourself, job for a CORGI engineer only.
Please check the sticky at the top of the forum.

ParticipantDear Penguin,
Thanks for your reply, and guiding me to the safety advice. I wondered if there might be any point in replacing the two parts which lift off, as the flames don’t seem to be getting through properly.
Thanks

Hi BBD
Try this..
Take the knob off( it just pulls off ) once you have turned the tap on,then push the brass shaft in at the same time as lighting one of the other burners..
If the flame stays lite then swap one of the other knobs onto the faulty one.The knobs do wear and this sometimes cures the problem.
If the flame doesnt stay lite then the thermocouple will need to be changed.

More like a crown seating or mix problem?

Thanks for everyone’s advice.
Tried swapping the knobs, but didn’t work. I assume that crown seating means making sure that the crown and support are on properly, which they are. Mix sounds like something gas-related, which is where I stop fiddling. Tried to look up an engineer in SW London, but there are none listed. Can you offer any advice on how I might find someone, or do I need to go the firm recommended by Smeg ?

Hi
It might be quickest to contact Smeg as sometimes parts are model and make specific. you could try the repairs@ feature in the navigation window on the left hand side for a corgi registered agent serving your post code. Failing that it might be best to contact Smeg themselves.

Sorry to pester again, but:
Was about to book an engineer, when I noticed that the burner stays lit if there is a saucepan over it, i.e. flame only goes out when there’s nothing being cooked.
Does that tell anyone anything useful ? Is it meant to be like that (I don’t think it used to be), or is it a sign that it needs a repair ?
Thanks again
