ParticipantWhen we switch the oven on the red light comes on, as does the fan. However the oven temperature is not increasing. The red light remains on and the oven does not get hot.
We have checked the oven timer by switching off the power and resetting. From browsing the forum we think that it might be the heating element? Do you think we should order a new one?
Any advice greatly appreciated.

Before spending money, find out if it has actually blown! You can often tell visually, failing that a multimeter is required or pro help.
is the popular element.
Do nothing without pulling the plug first.

ParticipantThe element seems fine to me. Interestng observation: after I switched it back on, and I hadnt reset the clock, the oven light and fan did not come on. once I reset it, the light and fan came on with out the elemnt working. Also the alarm hasn’t been v audible recently! Could the non functioning of the element have anyhing to do with a faulty timer or am I barking up the wrong tree!

The timer business is a safety issue – it resets to “automatic” mode until the time is set. The element is still your main suspect. If you cannot safely test it with a multimeter, it is time for some professional help. Check Repairs@UKWhitegoods or Directories for a UKW repairer in your area.

ParticipantNo repairers in my area, London SW19, so I,ve gone ahead and ordered an element. On removal of the back panel (via big flat head screw) revealing element and fan in centre, I am unsure how to remove the element and would appreciaite a talk through. I conscientiously switch off at mains before any investigation.

The oven needs to come out of the housing as the element is secured from the rear, as it’s a double oven this is a 2 person lift and you will need something the right height you can slide it on to. It’s also very heavy so please be careful !!
I have another list of repairers at home if you get stuck, let me know.

Hi
We’ve just bought a Smeg oven. We followed the instructions to turn it on, but whilst the timer works, the oven does not heat up and simply goes through the timer cycle without warming up. Is there a simple way to turn it on?
Thanks!

Selector switch and thermostat set as well as timer?

Hi Penguin,
Thanks, but we have tried that. The fan comes on, but there is no heat and the timer subsequently turns itself off (after the set time).

As it’s new, you’re under guarantee, so make the call……. Rather disappointing though.
