ParticipantHi all I have a problem with my Smeg cooker. I had the cooker on when it tripped out the mcb but when I started it up again it only trips out when it is on the oven with ventilation(a picture of a fan with a circle around it). I have checked connections etc and it is fine on the grill and the fans seem to be working so could it be the actual switch?
Any ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks DavidJanuary 17, 2005 at 6:11 pm #123860eastlmark

David, almost certainly your fan elements are blown and maybe this has taken out another component too. If you remove the inner back panel of the oven (2 large silver screws) you can inspect the elements and they may be obviously blown or they may appear ok but have blown anyway. Do not touch them without switching off at the mains first
Its a complex beast this one and could I suggest you use our repairs@ service: http://www.ukwhitegoods.co.uk/search/fi … ineer.html to find a service engineer if you dont feel able to do it yourself.January 17, 2005 at 6:56 pm #123861skims

Thanks for the quick reply. I removed the panel and checked the elements and they look ok, can I put a meter on them from the back to check them.
Cheers

Whatever you do, just ensure it is disconnected. I think with that model the elements can be removed from inside and tested. You will need a megger to carry this out.

You are right in that they can be undone from the inside quite easily. what kind of reading should I expect to get if I put a megger on the element.
Thanks again for the adviceJanuary 18, 2005 at 12:17 pm #123864Martin

skims,
The insulation reading (between any earth point on the element) and its terminals should be less than 1 megohm. However whilst that is the legal requirement, it is unacceptable even at that I reckon. In fact if you have a reading less than 10 megohms I would replace it without question.
The ideal reading on your megohms scale is ‘infinity’ and that will indicate a perfectly serviceable element

Thanks very much Martin for that I will test them and see what I get. Can I buy the elements through this website?
