ParticipantHi All,
Don’t want to abuse the trade forum but here is my (very long!) story.
We’re in (an overly expensive) rented house and the Smeg UK80MFX circ. element fan motor is dying (noisy bearings). I told the landlord what the problem was and needed oven for important family gathering at weekend but they still sent their help round to inspect (fair enough I suppose).
He was an old boy wearing open topped sandals (November!). 😯
I had the fan and element exposed for him. He struggled on the fan for a few seconds. Got the fan off and decided he would try to apply some oil! :rolls:
If I had called him in that’s the point he would have left!
He then realised the motor came from rear. He refitted the fan, turned it on and heard the noisy fan motor. Then decided it needed a new fan motor.
Hmm. Okay. He took the model number and left uttering something about his spares place not having been contactable that morning.
NB Not once did he get any kind of meter out!
Heard nothing by 5pm so rang landlord. They chased.
Next day got a call from old boy. Supplier doesn’t recognise model. He took wrong one! I gave him correct one and he said he’ll speak with his supplier (Repair shop in Cheshunt) and get back to me with news.
Heard nothing so rang landlord few hours later. Cannot get part. They tried Smeg direct (actually servevast but they didn’t realise) but not in stock. 2-3 weeks! I looked on line and found 3 companies saying in stock, inc servevast. Rang two inc servevast and both had stock. If had been ordered day before could have had for weekend.
Advised landlord giving names, numbers etc and part now ordered. Too late for weekend but probably quicker than if old boy had been left to own devices!
Not looking forward to his return visit. More through fear of what I might say as I’m sure he was very effective once upon a time but hasn’t instilled in me much confidence. Especially the no meter bit!
I just want an easy life these days but you know what these engineers (can we still say that?) are like! 😉Anyway,…I know the oven is supposed to have top and bottom oven elements for convection but the selector knob markings have been rubbed off and the user manual on Smeg’s site doesn’t show this knob configuration.
So, (at last!) can anyone please advise on the convection position of the selector/’stat knobs?
If you’ve read this far, ta for your patience. All the best,
G

Cannot tell you the exact position, but its usually between 1 oclock and 4 oclock. (ie on the opposite side to the fan cooker) Best way to tell is select a position and a temperature and put your hand on the floor of the oven, after a minute or so you should feel some heat seeping through from below.

Thanks Mark.
I’ve had a fiddle (oo-er!) and couldn’t make sense of the combination of selector and stat, not much heat generating at all so wasn’t sure if element/s was/were faulty. It’s rental so don’t wanna get involved with repair!
I’ll try again as you suggest.
Trial and error I suppose.
Just wanted (needed!) it by tomorrow.Cheers again.

ParticipantHi Gertrude
Hope you manage to make sense of the correct position of the selector switch/ stat.
You can probably buy the manual as a spare part from servevast.
In the engineers defence, why would he use a test meter to test if the fault is a noisy fan?.November 22, 2008 at 10:50 pm #269197eastlmark

Must also admit that if it is a hard wired oven then I would not have troubled my meter either….the open toe sandels though are a definate danger sign!November 23, 2008 at 12:11 am #269198Gertrude

Hi All,
I downloaded the manual from http://www.smeg-service.co.uk (servevast) but it doesn’t show the correct knob configuration for this cooker.
I think I’ve worked it out now (cheers Mark!) and penciled it on to the facia.
However, the better half thinks it takes too long to warm up in convection mode (over 25 mins to 250 degrees so got a point if only for the electric usage! 😯 ). Says she shan’t bother for the family do (sandwiches!) :rolls:As for the use of a meter, he didn’t check whether it’s hard wired (I know it should be but…) and should have at least done an earth continuity check. Also, if it is hardwired you could work off the terminal block if you wanted to be proper. Or is that me being pedantic?
It’ll be interesting (well, for me) to see what the landlord says on the property inspection this Thursday if it’s not fixed before then.
Once again, thanks for taking the time to read and more so, to respond.
All the best,
G
