ParticipantHi
We have a Smeg UK80MFX1 and the cooling fan started to never turn off. I replaced the cooling fan thermostat a few years back and so I thought it would be this again.
Both the old thermostat and the new thermostat I ordered gets very hot straight away before I turn on the oven.
1 – Is this normal that the stat gets hot even when nothing is on? (I presume not, and you can hear the thermostat click on)
2 – If it is not normal, what might be the problem / how would I go about diagnosing it?
The thermostat is the one here https://shop.ukwhitegoods.co.uk/8187305 … thermostat and connects the temperature control, oven selector and the cooling fan solenoid.
Many thanks
Ben

from what i can see this reminds me of the system used on AEG ovens. they use a small heater to heat up a switch to turn on the oven.
I dont know the connection but 2 wires are the energizing and the other 2 switch the fan on. my guess is that the energising side is either
A fed continuously because another switch is faulty
or
B you have put a wire in the wrong placeDave

Hi
I don’t think this controls the oven (it works fine without, just the controls get hot) – it only controls the cooling fan when it gets too hot. Because the thermostat gets too hot on its own, the cooling fan is always on…
If you fed the stat continually, would the thermostat / thermistor get hot?
How would you work out which switch is faulty?

no i know it does not control the oven
from the picture there a 2 sets of wires looks like 2 blue and 2 white
one set of wires powers the fan
the other set of wires is the energising wiredo any of the wires go directly to the fan ?
if yes its the other wires that have the problem
are you sure you connected it in the same way it came out ?

Hi
There are 4 wires as you say
1 white to the cooling fan
1 white and 1 blue joined and go to the oven selector knob
1 blue goes to the grill temperature knobHow would you work out which of these are faulty?
I have connected it the same way as it came out. The mystery to me is what is causing the thermostat to heat up.
Thanks for all your help.

i would guess its getting hot because its powered up and should not be before the oven turns on
1 is the fan running all the time ?
2 try this disconnect the wire that goes to the fan and see if the unit still get hot
long shot you did not mix the colours up did you
