SMEG UK80MFX1 – Oven and grill not working

The oven and grill will not switch on and the thermostat light and lights inside the oven are not coming on. The fan had already stopped working previously. The timer comes on and usually works (sometimes when it goes off it is not audible) and the timer is not on automatic. The gas hob still works. I have checked all the elements and they look ok and I can’t see any faulty connections or any sign of anything burnt out.

Check the safety overheat thermostat, mounted on the rear of the oven cavity to the left looking from the front.

If it’s open circuit, replace it.

I’ve replaced the safety overheat thermostat but it’s still dead. could it be the main stat or oven switch?

Did you meter it to see if it was okay?

The only other possibilities I can see on that machine are the clock and the main oven function switch, either could be candidates.

Asides those I can’t really see anything that’s likely or possible myself.

my meter’s not working so i couldn’t check the safety overheat thermostat, i just replaced it anyway. i’ll get a new meter and check both the stats. i’ll have a look at the switch as well.

There is one broken connection on the main switch – it’s the one right at the back looking from front to back. However it doesn’t give any reading on the meter at all. All the connections that do give readings give closed circuit readings. I checked the old safety stat that I replaced and actually it was ok.
The only resistance I could pick up was a reading of 103 from a part that i can’t identify – under the hob cover midway back and slightly to the left. It has ‘mvl’ on it and the following:
RL148/1200 A2-
3020LH-464 aat

As you can see, not a lot of details at all. But if you tell me what position number I can certainly tell you what it is etc.

i’m afraid i can’t identify it from the diagram. it looks like a small square motor with the copper wire running round and it sits on top and in the middle of a raised circular piece (about 10″ in diameter) of the sheet of metal that covers the whole of the oven – below the gas pipes.
I mentioned as well about a broken connection on the main switch. Could this cause the whole switch to fail?

Sorry, missed that and yes is the answer, it could well be the case that if the switch is damaged, even on a single pole of it, that you get as you describe. For example, if that’s the live feed pole on the switch for the fan oven you’d get nadda from it if it were busted or the wire was adrift.
