Smeg WDI12 oddball problem

Help please ❗

Customer reports fault with WDI12 s/n 0490781443 saying “grey sludge at rear of drum and on clothes”. Engineer calls and discovers that if you look at the rear of the drum through the porthole you can see the spider, collecting around this is all the sludge previously mentioned.

Question is should there be a cover of some sort over this?

The hole is the hot air inlet for the dryer. She’s probably had a nice bouncy load loosen up all the crud, so a couple of service washes should do the trick.
