    Hi folks,

A bit of a worrying few hours tonight! I was washing my sheets after another load had finished in my Smeg integrated washer dryer and happened to notice some white smoke coming from the detergent tray. I immediately stopped the washing machine and smelt the washing and there was a metallic smell.

At this point I realised I may have left a £2 coin in my jeans on the previous wash and also a zip fastener from a jumper was missing.

I put the sheets on again and stood there for two hours for the wash/dry cycle to complete with no sign of smoke or the metallic smell again.

I have used a torch and looked in the drum to the inner drum (through the holes) and cannot see the £2 coin or fastener. I’ve also had the drain filter open as advised in the manual and there is nothing there.

Is there anyway I can get to the inner drum to see if anything is there – could these things be anywhere else? Should I even worry as there is now no smell or white smoke?

(I think the smoke and smell may have been the fastener melting as I have found some minute traces of sticky metallic substance on the washing which was similar to the fasteners colour)

I’ve just been looking and a new machine is £500 – if I have to buy one, it’s a lesson learnt for not checking my pockets first although I couldn’t do anything about the fastener!! I honestly cannot see how the fastener or £2 coin have managed to get inside the drum as the seal is really tight and I can’t even get a little bit of my finger in there……

Thanks for all your help and advice
    Rob

    Hi

No real way to see directly if there is any coins inside the tank ass other than trying to look through the water heater hole after removing the heater which if your not competent to carry out then it’s a engineer visit. What temperature wash was you doing with the sheets ? as it could have been just steam.

    Hi Bryan,

Thanks for the advice – I definitely won’t be trying anything then as I’m not a great engineer when it comes to dismantling things! 🙂

I have a feeling it may have been steam…. the wash was at 40C and it was on a normal dry cycle which I believe is at 90C. The white smoke seemed to disappear about 10cm away from the dispenser and my apartment certainly didn’t stink of smoke.

Maybe a combination of things has led me to believe it was smoke rather than anything else. I’ll keep checking the drain about once a month to see if anything appears assuming I have no more issues.

    Thanks
    Rob
