Hi – We have a Diplomat ADP 8132 that has worked fine since we inherited it from the previous house owners 8 years ago. Tonight however I put the tablet in and set the normal wash cycle, closed the door and it gave the normal 2 beeps and the initial drain cycle started. At that I left it thinking that all was well but after 5 mins there was a buzzing sound, a bit of smoke and the washer hadn’t done anything. It seems that it hasn’t taken water in but the element has overheated. Can someone point me in the right direction for a solution? It is an inbuilt unit so I have gone into the kickboard space and removed the outer panel. Don’t really know whet I am looking for but nothing seems kaput. The mains filter (I have found out) is falling apart but I believe that it wont be the cause and the machine can operate without it. If the element is burnt out (it looks kinda black) would changing it resolve the issue or would there be something else lurking?

Mains filters can and do burn, blow and sometimes even catch fire. Heating elements often become blackened through normal use and when they fail usually blow a fuse as a result. Unless something plastic (like a medicine spoon or basket wheel) falls on the element and starts smoking of course. Finally, the main circulation pump motor could have seized and that indeed would cause smoke and create a pungent burning smell. Whatever the reason …it ain’t good I must admit. 😥

Martin – thanks for the reply. Yeah – I kinda figured that the smell and the smoke wouldn’t be good. Rather than paying a guy for a visit and repairs to a 8+ year old machine that was playing up anyway – we have ordered a new machine to replace it. Hopefully it will fit the gap and last another 8 years.
