I have noticed in quite a few places now that soda crystals are being recommended as a cost saving measure for washing clothes with as “they make up a large percentage of washing powder anyway”.

Is this a good idea and will it cause more harm than good in the long term? I know nothing of the technicalities of washing powder so thought I’d ask some people that might know!

    Re: soda crystals

Complete tosh, I’m afraid. There are no soda crystals in detergents, either. By far the most economical way to wash is to use a quality powder and pay particular attention to the dosing instructions on the box.

Combined with correct loading and sorting and a monthly service wash (90c and a quality whites detergent), your machine should function at its best.
