Have never used the gun type. Is it for soldering to brush tags? I usually use an 18watt iron for board work.

I don’t know if the dearer guns have a different tip material but I’ve had a couple of cheap ones from places like Lidl and it’s difficult to keep the tip tinned. For most jobs an ordinary iron with copper tip is better but I’ve managed without my trusty Antex iron I’d had since the mid ’70s having lost it a few years ago 😥

Yeah, I’ve had same problem for last five or ten years, even with irons and tips labelled Antex. (Could they be fake?) I wasn’t sure whether I was doing something wrong. Or could it be in the nature/ quality of the solder? Lead free seems to take longer to melt but even lead solder doesn’t perform like it used to. Soldering has definitely become a more difficult job for some reason. I had thought it might be my age.
Even cleaning the tip before use with emery paper doesn’t help much. It’s all corroded again next time I use it. Or 💡 is it the air here in Cornwall?
