ParticipantHi,
I’m looking to change the thermostat on the Whirlpool ARG420/3 since even on the highest setting (7), the fridge only cools to 10C. I have tested by bypassing the thermostat and the fridge goes down to 0C, so I am pretty confident that the problem is the thermostat.
I have identified the replacement thermostat that I require (ATEA A13-0434), however the capillary tube of the old thermostat is soldered onto the end of the condensor! I have rung one company who were really surprised by this, but I was just wondering if I do really need to buy a soldering iron to take the old capillary tube out or if I can somehow use the old capillary tube with the new thermostat.
How is the capillary tube normally attached to the condenser?
I look forward to hearing from you – many thanks in advance for any advice!

Hi Ham,
No, it’s this thermostat and it should be a straight change, the capillary shouldn’t be soldered into place so I’m as stumped as whoever else you’ve spoken to.
They are often secured with a clip but I’ve never seen (or heard) of one being soldered to the evaporator.

Hi kwatt,
Many thanks for the reply with the link to the thermostat.
It does seem strange that the old capillary tube is soldered in place. Perhaps the unit was repaired before (not very competently?). It’s been running on 10C for a while now and we had been wondering why our food was going off so quickly. It’s a good thing that we don’t eat meat!
Here’s a photo of the end of the capillary tube attached to the condenser just in case you can offer any further advice on how to change the thermostat. I’d also be interest to know what the bronze-coloured part is, which joins the condenser to the capillary tube.

Many thanks once again for the advice.
Regards,
Hamilton

My apologies, I have just pulled the thermostat out and it appears that the wire pictured comes from elsewhere!
So it looks like I’ll easily be able to replace the thermostat!
Many thanks for the help!
