Participantspoke to an old dear today whos indesit w d id repaired last week (cleaned out condensor and replaced cut out) she said she thought the repair was expensive and had i really changed the cut out 😕 I explained that as it was now heating and drying this was proof enough that id done as id said I also explained that id been there over an hour and id gave her a chance to think about having it done but she was certain that she wanted it doing I questioned why she was only now ringing me (nearly a week later) and she said her son who only visits once a month had said it was expensive just to take off the top and clean out the fluff :rolls: sons waiting for inheritance dont you just love em 😉

I think I would be really annoyed about the qestioning of if you really replaced the cut out.Shes basically calling you a cheat. You should of told her it would of cast her £100 to get indesit out so she got a bargain.ohhhhhhhh they make you mad.
I think you could tell some people it will be a fiver and it would be to much.
For instance I went to a tumble dryer down the road fault not working dead.Timer knob had broke.New part was about nine quid .So me being a mug thought I wont charge her full labour I said 30 quid will do it only a five minuite job.She went up the wall 30 pound for a new knob blah blah.I nearly told her to shove it but its not very professional. 😥June 2, 2009 at 12:12 am #288301Cras

its why i always dread doing jobs for old folk on there own . After agreeing a price etc some know all relative rings questioning everything youve said and only just stopping short of calling you a conman.I particulaly like the son who informs you on your arrival to fix a washer that he s certain its the brushes and he would have done it himself but for his bad back 😥 then you inform them its an its an induction motor and has no brushes he normally retreats to another room till youve gone 😆

The I could of done it myself brigade.Nine times out of ten they dont have a bloody clue. You just feel like telling em if your so bloody smart what am I doing here.Customers ahhh your carnt beat em ……………………..only with a stick. 😆June 2, 2009 at 8:52 am #288303AMS

Went to an old boy with an old 95 series hotpoint. No motor action. “My son is really clever and he changed the brushes so it must be something else.” Had a look anyway. Sure enough, there in the motor sat a brand new set of brushes, except that the really clever son had not read the packet and bent the tabs back. Not wanting to shatter the old boy’s illusions, I tinkered about underneath for a while and put it down to a bad connection on the module and charged him a token amount. Dishonest or soft?

Soft imo mate. They’re paying for your expertise. You did what his son couldn’t do even if his son was halfway there. It shouldn’t matter whether you did an hours hard sweat or an easy five minutes, it’s your knowledge and ability that you’re charging for. By all means hide his son’s blushes if you have to though.
Don’t give it away.

Yep, i think we’re often viewed as guilty unless we prove ourselves innocent by the rellys of old folk.. pisses me off though, i ALWAYS go really easy on the obviously poor pensioners, & the typical suspicious, questioning son who invariably comes through the back door half way through the job, fairly winds one up 😯
Mind you, i cant really talk, reminds me of an incident a few years ago when my mother (in her 60’s) called me on my mobile to ask if she could borrow some cash to pay the ‘nice gentlemen’ who had just fitted copper sheeting to the ridge tiles of her bungalow 😯
Now, i didnt know the ins & outs of the theory that copper kills moss on tiles or whether it works or not but i did know that these cold calling wide boys were’nt getting a bloody penny!!Arrived at the old birds house to confront these characters & was faced with a pretty aggressive duo once they realised they were’nt getting their £300 .
Anyway, one police car (fairly useless) & call to trading standards (more helpful) later, they gave up & buggered off (promising to ‘sort me out later’ ) :rolls: 🙂We all protect our old mums though 😉

Good on you madmac.Im just picturing the scene. You telling two burley roofers to sling it,them wanting there money and a copper in the middle with no idea what to do.
Its people like these that give selfemployed tradesmen a bad name. You only have to watch rogue traders to think that everyones at it.Folks are very much on there guard nowadays you have to win or earn there trust.I think you know when your doing a good job if they call you back and recommend you to friends.Nobody is going to please everyone all the time but as long as most are happy your doing ok.
I know the bulk of my work comes through recomendations not adverts .Lets face it there is nothing nicer than knocking on the door and them telling you that you’ve been recommended by a friend. 😀June 3, 2009 at 11:16 am #288309lee8

The UK hides responsibility behind legislation.
The amount of grief i get by people who instead of lookin into there computors and making a decission is beyond a joke.
A just went to the DR for daughters repeat medical form, on request paper i filled out last week i missed the name of the medication. :rolls:
So I go there today to pick up the form, to be faced by a receptionist who cannot give me the form as i didn`t write the name of the drug.
No props, i cant remember. :rolls:
Reply, sorry can`t give you the form without knowing name of drug.
I don`t know it, can you check.
No we cannot.
Why, just look at the records.
I `am, but i need the name of the drug.
I don`t know it.
Well we cannot give you the form without the name of the drug.
So being smartass i say can i have some Methonal, morphine and the largest dose available of Diazapan. 😆
No thats not what the patient is on.
So I say, can i have what the computor say I should have then.
No, we need to check and you need to write the name down.
but its in the records, she`s only on one drug, the last one this surgery recommended.
So off she goes and asks the DR.
Now an i goin insaine or what. 😥
As for W/M is a client feels your repin them off, you`ll probably get no logic, there just hiding behind regualations to ripe you off. 😉
