I bought a £4000 kitchen from MFI which included a built in Diplomat ADP4830 cooker. After 6 weeks we had to call them out to look at the door of the oven which did not seem to close properly and left a gap at the top, they replaced a faulty seal and it was ok. Now 6months on and my son was heating something for his lunch and when he opened the oven after 30 mins the glass plate on the inside of the oven door exploded in a zillion pieces all over the kitchen, there was no pressure on it in any way, he simply pulled open the door and BANG.
Has anybody heard of similar cases relating to Diplomat cookers or any other cookers where glass doors/screens have just spontaneously shattered? By the way MFI would only offer to replace the shattered glass screen with a similar one but refuse to replace the cooker despite this being the second fault in 6 months.

    Hi Steve,

    It happens I’m afraid. 😕

For no apparent reason a door glass can shatter. It could be an impurity in the glass, a hotspot or simply bad luck but usually once they are replaced there’s no further issues in my experience. This can happen on any make, any model and there’s no rhyme or reason to the failure in terms of brand.

The “explode” is from the fact that it is safety glass, kinda like that in a car window, it shatters into a million bits when it goes in the same manner. It looks bad, but really it isn’t that bad.

It is not normal practice to exchange any appliance on a whim, just like any other consumer product and this is a very easy fix so there’s no real reason to swap it out for a mere door glass.

Most manufacturers recommend NOT to let customers hang damp tea towels on oven door handles thus causing materiel to come in contact with glass; the temp difference causes glass to shatter.
Althogh as Ken said it does happen. I reckon its the heating up and down that upsets the molecular properties of the glass till they eventually cannot take it anymore 😆

In addition to the sound advice above, I would add that in some instances, an impact on the door glass can have a delayed reaction.
Shattering the day after an impact is not unheard of.
