I know it’s been raised before but I thought I’d document it in the “Articles” section where there is a little piece I’ve written about the pricing of spares, its in the “articles and views on the service industry” section.

Please discuss and tell me if I’m wrong on anything.

    I don’t think that’s a bad summary.

Thanks, I’ve updated it a bit now since I’ve had ten minutes peace.

As Flipper had said, that about sums the situation up very nicely.

The spares overpricing subject is of huge importance to us, it affects so many aspects of our industry.

    Very good article Ken. 😀

Well folks if you thought that Servis spares were expensive as they were, think again!

    12{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} increase from December the 1st 2003

My opinion of it, horrific! Given that I priced a pump, motor, module, timer and inner drum for an M3022 yesterday and the total for spares alone was £443 incl VAT for a machine retailing for under £200!

    Taking the Michael or what?

There should be a government investigation into the price of spares etc…..that would shake up this industry.

    Which department would do that????????

There’s a few Ted, but the primary one to contact is the OFT (Office Of Fair Trading) which can be found at:

    http://www.oft.gov.uk

They would then forward their findings generally to the Competions Commision which would take the decision on what action to take if a monopoly or complex monopoly was found to be in place.

    Mark,

Yes along with a host of others recently as well.

Maybe we should start a “Most ridiculous part price” thread in the *PUBLIC* forums and fill it with some of the crazy prices we get.

Great article K. I would say that in your closing statement though, you missed out us, the repairers.

” ..At the end of the day there?s only one party that wins on high spares pricing, the manufacturer and only one that loses, the customer!”

We also lose out big time along with the customer as we lose so many chargable jobs.

    Re: Spares Pricing

With these ludicrous price hikes arn’t we getting, god forbid, to the stage of the Americans, of a throw away society, because the repair cost out weighs the replacement cost.
As you rightly say the only winners are the manufacturers, and as they produce more and more rubbish products, for lower and lower prices,
    WE get squeezed out.
I think Kens idea of ridiculus prices in the public section, perhaps along with the cost of the part from a reputable supplier outside of the manufacturer, : ie quality bearings outside say £10, manufacturer same make bearing £40, is a good idea 😈
