Spray painting white goods

I have a fridge and washing machine that are both over 10 years old with the white paint work either darkened (possibly faded) in places or stained. I’ve been quite impressed with some of the results you can get from spray cans which are being sold as appliance sprays on ebay and elsewhere. Anyway, I am thinking of going for another colour like Silver or even metallic blue but am not sure if it would work so well. I know it’s a bit of a whacky idea, but then plain white doesn’t do it for me anyway. Anyone done anything like this, and think it’s fairly easy to do or is it difficult to get a good finish??

It depends on the price of the paint.

You can buy Hamerite paint from most DIY stores.

You need to buy the smooth finish type and you may find this is a cheaper and easier paint to use.

Make sure you prepare well as with any spray paint but Hamerite does not require any undercoat

With a spray can it’s impossible to have anywhere near a smooth, seamless finish. But is guaranteed to leave no-one in any doubt that it has been sprayed especially the corners and the mouldings around the door. Spraying a white appliance silver looks even worse and begs the question how are you going to paint over the plastic door trim and fascia panels without covering up the numbers and programme guide?

OK, those are good points. After I posted this last night I seen a photo of a job that had gone wrong when someone tried to spray paint their fridge silver so it looks fairly difficult. I think you need to polish after you spray paint and even then I have not seen any good before and after photos.

I might try t-cut or some other paint enhancer to see if that does the trick.
