I don’t need to fix anything; I was just wondering how anti-scale systems work on steam irons. There appear to be two types. The first is irons with replaceable anti-scale cartridges – What’s in the cartridges? Is it some kind of water softener or is it acid for reacting with the limescale?
The second kind is a lifetime anti-scale system. How does that work????
Our iron is the lifetime variety. With previous irons I might fill the tank with vinegar occasionally and run it through it – maybe that would be helpful with this one, but without knowing how the antiscale system is working it is difficult to tell.
    Anybody know anything about them?
    Thanks

    Hi

It`s mainly Tefal irons that have the replaceable cassette IIRC and also the more permanent one. this link to the FAQ section of the Tefal site might help.

    Thank you.
The one I have is Morphy Richards. They probably work the same. I’m afraid that the FAQ doesn’t help me to understand how it works.
Thanks though. I have emailed them the same question. I would be surprised if they answer it very quickly though. I have kind of given up on Morphy Richards.

The answer: The permanent anti-scale system, used by Morphy Richards, contains a weak acid cation resin. It is made by Puralite.
