Not really turps, but it’s the closest I can get, or maybe nail varnish remover. Never smelt anything like it before. It’s a tiny kitchen, was fine at 10am, didn’t cook anything, go back at about 1pm, and gosh a real pong that is still there. Cant source it, I have a fridge, electric cooker, and washer/dryer, stuck my head in all of those and the cupboards including under the sink, and the sink drain, cant smell it there, more the middle of the room. Don’t have any pets. Other than putting something down the drain anything else I could do to trace it? Only thing I’ve noticed my fridge has doubled in temp at 10c, and the sides feel warm as does the door seal but that’s not new, the sides anyway. Stumped. Hopefully it’ll go away but very odd.

Appliances do not produce odours as such and certainly not strong ones unless there is an obvious problem, only what’s put in them does.

Not even refrigerants? (Not sure what they are, but they turned up on google search)

    Nope.

And even if you did get an odour from them, it’s a tiny amount of gas so it’d be gone in no time at all.

Thanks. I guess the best thing is to move the fridge to another room to eliminate it as a source, as the smell is getting worse and spreading to other rooms. It’s not freezing properly anyway, it’s about 5 in the freezer and 12 in the fridge.

OK, think I’ve possibly found out what caused the smell (tho its still there despite fridge being in another room) There’s a cyclinder at the back below what I guess is a drip tray. That appears to have burnt inside overnight or I didn’t spot it yesterday. A box to the left of the cylinder also has signs of burning. As long as it’s unplugged is it safe? It’s a 20 year old Samsung SR 30RMB or SR30WD1xEU (that’s what it says on the outside).

There’s no danger if it’s unplugged.

Thanks. I dunno if you’ve had much exposure to burnt fridges, and I guess you’re not a doctor, but ever since i’ve had headaches and nausea, it’s really wiped me out.

Unless you set it on fire (literally!), there’s nothing given off it.

Even an old, old fridge will have a couple hundred or so grams of gas in it, anything remotely modern will be R134a or R600a neither of which, unless you almost breath it and nothing else wouldn’t cause any harm.

See, there’s all this health and safety stuff makers have to adhere to, kinda makes them being largely inert or as inert as possible a thing.

But I have seen foodstuffs spilled in them, inside and out creating the most horrid of smells etc but, that’s got bog all to do with the appliance.

I’m not a doctor but I know abut refrigeration.

If I were you I’d contact a doctor if you are unwell, I can’t help with that.

It was definitely not food, cleared it and pulled everything out in the kitchen. I don’t know what caused the burnt drip tray and box but was more wondering if just breathing that in ever could make you so ill. Feeling slightly less like death today so all good. Finding it tough to get rid of the stink though, might be a wipe down the walls job.

Btw, I recently returned from holiday, if that had happened to the fridge whilst I was away, what’s the most likely thing to have happened? For one night nothing disastrous happened, but a week or more?

The unit would stop working is about the worst that could happen.
