went to a Hotpoint dishwasher yesterday. customer had left his daughter in to wait for me as she is home from university. Quickly realized that the unit would not pump out.

removed bottom cover and electronics access to remove pump supply wire. unclipped pump and drained water into a small bowl, all this time lying on the floor. found a white solidified powder around the pump and then became aware my hands were were slippy. Jumped up and immediately washed my hands to get it off and asked his Daughter what her father had done to cure the blockage and it was then she informed me he had used caustic soda to try to clear the blockage

one splash in the wrong place and I could be blinded not to mention chemical burns to my hands if i had not realized

    Hi Dave

It’s a problem that has certainly got worse over the past few years. We had some :poo: in a vacuum cleaner a few weeks ago. So now the vans and the workshop have these latex gloves. The only downside is they can make your hands sweat if worn for a long period. Goggles are also available as well.

To be safe you could always keep one of these suits on the van for the worst case scenario :rotfl:

    Gotta love the internet.

You see stuff like that all over the place, caustic soda, lemon juice, vinegar and God only knows what else being used to “fix” things. It’s online so it must be true. :rolls:

Had exactly the same in a blocked dishwasher, just didn’t feel right then my hands started getting warm. Spent next 10 mins rinsing under a cold tap
First time I think I’ve ever sworn in front of a customer

I don’t know if it works with all brands but I noticed early on my blue paper roll acts as a litmus paper, turning from blue to pink in caustic soda.

I had this with a hotpoint dw about 2 months ago. Done the same. Burnt like hell and when i said to the customer whats this white stuff they said Acid. Hands slipped so bad I could not work on it so i pushed the machine back under and BER it.

Regardless of whether it will cure the fault….would you use a dishwasher that had had caustic in it……beggars belief some of the plebs out there.
