Hi, I’ve just bought a new Bosch washing machine and as there have been thunderstorms lately wondered whether surge protection is needed or not on washing machines? Do they already have some sort of protection?

Maybe something like this : http://www.amazon.co.uk/Belkin-SurgeCube-1-Way-3-Pin-Protection/dp/B0001GYNJC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1406412290&sr=8-1&keywords=surge+protector

    Re: Surge protection?

They are mainly designed to protect PC’s, Laptops and other sensitive electronic equipment. They offer no protection whatsoever if your property is struck by lightning. However they may offer marginal security against electrical spikes from the mains supply. So better protected than not I suppose.:D

    Re: Surge protection?

Washing machines already use line smoothing capacitors on the cable so I would not assume there is a need for such an object… your best bet is to ask an electrician.

Having said that; even if you use one of these devices, your washing machine is still at risk to surges from any of the electrical components within should any of them go faulty… your surge protector will offer you no benefit in that situation
