Could anyone tell me if surge protectors work or indeed are needed with fridge freezers, and also washing machines?

I’ve searched this and other sites and found very little info. Some people seem to say they are useful but I’ve seen some who say they can potentially damaging.

Can anyone advise? I’ve just bought a new fridge freezer and washer and am wondering if they would be useful.

If it’s on a circuit protected by an RCD, not really, no.

Even if it isn’t, if there’s an issue, the fuse should blow before there’s any serious problem.

After that, the protection on the compressor should go.

    So, pretty much, not required.

Unless of course you live in the Iberian Peninsula or on the Balearics? Most sparks there fit surge protection devices to the consumer unit. A natural precaution there due to fluctuating power levels and lightning strikes :zap:

    Can’t be too cautious! 😉
