For the first time in a few years I’ve received a couple of CV’s and letters from school leavers asking for Apprenticeships in this trade, I just wanted to ask you all of you your experiences in this if any of you have ever taken on an Apprentice,I have thought of it in the past but never followed it up.
The main reasons I’ve considered it is mainly due to my age and my ability in the future to be able to do as much work as I do now, taking into account I have the usual dodgy knees, back etc that after 30+ years you get in this trade, I also have thought long and hard, and the youngest Engineer that I personally know is about 40 years old, and as we all know there are very few young Engineers around or starting in this industry.
I have employed Engineers before from various backgrounds, all were eventually found out as ‘part fitters’ as they previously worked for manufacturers etc and could not cope with multi brands or the Independent Company way of doing things, so my feelings are maybe it might be better to train an Apprentice in my way of doing the job with the correct qualifications, my main fear is you invest a large amount of money, time and effort only to see that walk away and become a competitor in a few years.
I am pretty sure may have been discussed before but I beg your indulgence 🙂
