ParticipantOur ancient tall freezer has died after 25 years service, and needs to be replaced. I’ve had a look at what’s around and the one that’s looking best value at the moment is the Hotpoint FZS175P. I’d appreciate any advice/feedback from anyone here though before buying.
Key points:
We don’t want to spend a fortune; the freezer will be used for the regular stuff – ie standard food shopping, with some space needed for the odd glut of fruit & veg or home-baking. Frost free would be ideal. It will be in the utility room, so slightly noisier than average isn’t a problem.I’ve managed to find one for £337 delivered (JLewis). I haven’t bought anything by Hotpoint for years, so have no idea about reliability, so any feedback about this particular model would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

Hi
Hotpoint refrigeration is middle of the road when it comes to quality and reliability of product. Frost free V non frost free? No defrost, longer storage times, products like bread stay seperated to a degree rather than sticking together, more expensive to run, less reliable (more tech inside than a non frost free ) and don`t leave the door open for a sustained period of time as you will end up with Ice Station Zebra which will need a 48 hour defrost.
So armed with all of the above the current deal at JL is a good deal for that model, I would extend the guarantee though 😉 If you can afford to increase the budget then take at a look at the Bosch equivalent.
HTH 🙂

Thanks for this, I really appreciate it – food for thought re frost-free vs the six-monthly battle/flood-fest of defrosting it myself! I’ll need to weigh up the options, I think.
Edit to add
Have now looked at Bosch – the GSN28V01GB height is ok (185 is too tall for our space, this one is 175 H). While it it isn’t going to break the bank at £459 & 20 delivered – it will be £150 more than the Hotpoint – however maybe I won’t need to replace this one for 25 years either!!The old one was an ‘Ocean’ (Beejam own brand) we bought just before they went into liquidation. It’s been well worth the money over the years 😛
