Just fitted a fan element in this free standing cooker. It’s less than two years old, purchased form Comet and is probably still a current model.

I am amazed that there is no screw fixing on the rear panel inspection cover. The cover is held on by gravity on five little tags on the galvanised back panel. Behind the panel is the fan motor and the element terminals. The panel literally falls off in your hand when manouvering the appliance. How the hell does this comply with any UK safety standards?

What safety standards are you talking about….. I remember Kite Marks but they only apply to British manufacturers?

I thought that any product sold in the UK had to comply with BEAB and British Standard safety legislation that states that any inspection cover can only be removed with use of a tool and that there must be an Electric Shock warning if the inspection cover is removed.

    You’re right Bob

BS EN60335-1- 1999 states that any internal part of an appliance with access to live components should only be removable with the aid of a tool.

This appliance should never have made it into the country, but there is a chance that the original sample sent for testing would have had that part fixed with screws. 👿 Then the likes of comet, B&Q and the kingfisher group along with teba would have got their heads together and came up with a way of making it cheaper. I’m surprised it still had a cooling fan.

If Teba has gone bust i won’t be surprised either if Comet help it along 😡 .

Lets not be too hasty in condemning the retailer – if the product has been purchased with a safety certificate issued by an appropriate authority then it will be normally taken by the retailers buyers as read that it compies with all relevant legislation.

Even if the retailer has their own in-house safety test lab it would not be the first time that a sample was approved and then the manufacturer went off and produced something different.

The UK arm of Teba went bust but as far as I am aware the parent company is still a going concern.

Anyway have a look at the link below and tell me the CEO of Teba isn’t Boycie from Fools and Horses!

I know for a fact that this group of retailers has done this.

1 major example is on some of the Terim made proline models.

I personally tested to british standards in a UKAS laboratory on of these ovens it passed (just by the skin of it’s control knobs). So the oven was approved for sale in the UK.

The next thing we find out customers complaing about excessive control panel and knob temps.

On investigating this i went and purchased the said model from the the big orange retailer for testing. Sure enough the cooling fan was missing.

On further investigation it turns out the buyer for the shed decided to shave of a few quid by having the fan removed.

A BIG no no. This ended up costing them £60 + cooling fan cost per oven
to have sorted. Say No More. This saving of £2.50 per oven cost them £75 per oven to fix.

We the test lab asked the manufacturer and they told us the big orange people ordered the fan to be removed.

When i went in to buy one, the sales assitant was reluctant to sell me one because of the problems being had. Just shows the staff aren’t even confident in the products. 😆

When I worked for a manufacturer (no names but very well known – Och Aye) it was called “Value Engineering”. The appliance was designed by R+D, field trialed and then half of it taken away by the “value engineers”. All to make a bob extra or two.

On a similar issue, why is the UK one of the last to fit flame supervision devices on domestic cookers. It is a legal requirement in Ireland and most of Europe and the last manufacturer in Italy that I had dealings with had to specially produce burner flash rings with only one hole for the igniter and none for the thermocouple!!

Surprised, (or am I not), that Corgi or HSE are not pressing this as a safety issue – perhaps the financial weight of UK cooker manufacturers has something to do with it…. the words dragging and screaming come to mind with the additional build costs.
