I have an elderly Megger BM8 Mk2. The movement is OK as the battery test part works OK but I suspect it’s not applying the correct test voltages. I tried to check this using the multimeter but the display just gave erratic readings. Possibly an analogue multimeter would better for this? What is the normal procedure for checking these devices?

Sounds like it would need calibrated?

Most Meggers generate a power supply to test, this is not so stable or regulated so this might be why the meter you are checking supply with shows deviation.
There are companies out there who calibrate them.

Try the makers of Megger first..

Thanks Seamy. I will enquire the cost of calibration, it was last done in 1999.
