It seems to me that all mmanufactureres advise the use of salt in their dishwashers. They also recommend the use of dishwasher tablets that also contain salt.
We are constantly being told of the risks to our health posed by the use of salt i.e. high blood pressure etc.
    Is it necessary to use:
    – either ❓
    – both ❓
I live in Milton Keynes which I don’t regard as a hard water area (unlike, say, Luton)
    Comments pls.

The salt is washed off and is not normal table salt either, it is only there to soften the water to ensure that the wash process works correctly. You would not actually consume any, or if you did I would think it would only be trace amounts.

    Douglas,

To add a little to my colleagues comments, salt is vital for all dishwashers (even in Milton Keynes) and in order for your machine to function correctly, has to be added at regular intervals into the relevant salt container.

From there the salt is used as a ‘flushing agent’ to clear the calcium build-up in the adjacent resin bottle. During this flushing out process the salt is drained away and does at no stage enter the cleaning area at all. Once the salt has been flushed through the resin bottle the final water softening process charges the resin bottle with clean water ready for the next wash cycle to begin.

Salt (Sodium Chloride ‘NaCl’) is vital to our very existence here on planet Earth, without it life would not exist and without it in your dishwasher even it will very quickly cease to exist through neglect. 🙁

I take your point about the necessity of salt in D/w. BUT that still leaves the issue of why put salt into the D/w then add a tablet with MORE salt ❓
The fact is that salt is bad for us with high blood pressure AND I can taste the salt on newly washed dishes!

I would advise you not to use 3-in-1 or 4-in1 products in that case. Frankly, I don’t rate them anyway.

The other point here Douglas is that the guys that help out in these forums are what they are, service technicians.

We dont design these appliances we only service and repair them. So perhaps your question would be better directed to the manufacturers.

I have to agree with the last post in so much that I do not (and never have) recommend 3 in 1 or 4 in 1 tablets.

IMHO They are a gimick and joke that cause a lot more problems than they to solve. but then perhaps the Great British public may have a far higher developed sense of humour than I.

I would think the risk is minimal – and it should all be flushed out as described earlier – the only risk I am aware of with salt is (also minimal) with a mains water sofetener – and this only affects those on sodium controlled diets or infants – and then you have a separate hard water tap fitted……but in this case you are actually drinking the water… not using a glass that (now dry) was washed in water that has been through a softener…. 😀 We have a mains softener at home, after we fitted it we stopped adding salt to the d/w as you get no scale anyway……

In that case Douglas (even if you insist on using 3 in 1 tablets) you clearly have a problem with your dishwasher. 🙁

Your concerns are justified at least to have an expert check it out for you. Without exception, the end result of any items washed in an automatic dishwasher these days (with any brand of detergent), should come out completely clean, shiny, have no residue left on them, visual or otherwise.

I include a link for your convenience should you wish to take my advise further :- Repairs@
