As the title really, we have a Hotpoint FF92 or 72 but it is close to the lounge door and makes a racket, so are there any less noisy models out now?

Don’s probably the best to answer this one, but in my experience most of them could be considered “noisy” but it depends on how much noise that you can or wil tolerate really. But whirring fans along with compressor noise means that there will be some noise.

Obviously the better the components the less noise so it probably pays to invest a bit if you want it quiet. Put it this way, my big US Maytag is quieter that the last normal sized Zanussi I had, a lot quieter.

you’re always likely to get more noise from a frost free fridge freezer, as ken says, because of the extra components.
also, when the compressor is idle, the evaporator fan could still be on, leaving you to think that the unit is running longer than normal.
this is a common complaint from first time frost free users.
that said, in my experience, the liebherr range is fairly quiet.
also, there should be a decibel level on the energy rating sheet that you could look at before purchasing any fridge.

I’m not being picky, but being into sound a bit…

The decibel scale isn’t truly linear, so whilst it gives an indication of noise it doesn’t take account of many, many factors. Like, is it installed in a cupboard that resonates and, in effect, will cause the sound to be amplified. Is it sitting on a sound reflecting floor surface, killer that one in kitchens as laminate flooring and some tiles will reflect sound and amplify what you hear to a degree.

Like most things in life, the noise level is subject to the surroundings that you place the machine in and the db rating that you usually get is under test conditions in a lab. 😉

Just beat me to it K 😉

When we sell any frost free appliance we point out to the customer the wood suspended floor problems and the stud wall can cause extra noise if appliance pushed back tight.

Saying that I supplied my daughter last autumn with a Hotpoint FFA91 (replacement model now available FFA97) which is in the kitchen on a concrete floor and apart from the odd gurgle it`s as quiet as a mouse.

Another good one is the Bosch KGU31125 frost free, sold one recently.
Customer came in to say how pleased they were, but because it was so quiet they found themselves opening the door to make sure it was still working 😀

If you can go the extra mile then the Miele range is good too.

We have a constant running battle with our Proline FF771 Frost Free Freezer over the racket it creates in our kitchen. 👿

I’ve wedged bits of underlay under its feet, placed thick furniture foam between it and the wall and even the odd thin piece of card into the control panel to stop it’s constant spurious noises. It vibrates, clicks, whistles and gurgles, but only when I choose to sit quietly and read the newspaper or puzzle the daily crossword. It’s timing is brilliant and sure puts a new meaning to the phrase “the silence is deafening”….

Now I have no idea who makes Proline but I suspect for all I know it comes from a panel beaters parlour in Paramaribo, where sound is neither “linear” nor there to them :rotfl:

So, if you suddenly spot a tall white Proline Freezer sticking out of a skip near you….. :rotl:

Thanks for the info. We have had this for a while and I know to expect some noise due to the physics, I wondered if there was a brand better than this for suppressing the noise, so thanks, as expected Bosch and Miele.
Not really easy to test in a showroom 😉
Unfortunately, it is beside the kitchen/lounge door, on tiles and the door is an arms length away, as I have to constantly pull it shut after her indoors leaves it open.
